GardePro Wildlife Camera — Part II
When we introduced the GardePro R3 wildlife camera in Part I, we were interested in more than simply seeing what the camera could do sitting on a workbench.

The Story
Living on 30 acres in northern New York gives us a pretty good laboratory for testing equipment.
Distances are greater. Trees and terrain get in the way. Weather isn't always cooperative. And when something is supposed to operate somewhere out on the property, we don't necessarily have the luxury of running a cable to it or checking on it every few hours.
That's why we decided to take the GardePro system into the field and see what happens when we put some real distance and real obstacles between the camera and the house.
This time, we're not interested in what the specifications say should happen.
We're interested in what actually happens here.
Getting the GardePro Into the Field
Our Part II testing begins with the GardePro Link 1.0 KIT, including the R3 camera and its associated hub.
The initial installation location was selected because it gave us a relatively clear line of sight across the property.
The first test location was approximately 500 feet from the house/hub location.
That's far enough away to make the test interesting, but still gives us a reasonably controlled environment.

The First 500-Foot Test
Our first real test was deliberately simple.
We wanted to know:
Could the GardePro system reliably communicate across approximately 500 feet with a relatively unobstructed line of sight?
This is where specifications meet reality.
A manufacturer can give you a maximum range under specific conditions, but our property doesn't exist inside a laboratory.
We have trees, hills, weather, vegetation and all of the other things that make rural property interesting.

In either case, we're learning what this system actually does under conditions that resemble the way we would really use it.
Moving Farther Away
Once we established how the system performed at the initial location, the next logical question was:
How much farther can we push it?
Rather than immediately jumping to an extreme distance, we're working progressively farther away from the hub.
That lets us see where performance begins to change.

The goal isn't necessarily to discover the absolute maximum range.
What we're really trying to determine is where the system remains dependable enough to be useful to us.
Now Let's Put Some Trees in the Way
This is where the test gets considerably more interesting.
Our property isn't an open field.
Trees are everywhere.
And if we're using a camera to watch wildlife, equipment, trails or other activity around the property, putting the camera somewhere with a completely unobstructed line of sight isn't always realistic.
So our next test introduces something the specifications can't fully describe:
the real world.

What happened?

This may turn out to be one of the most useful portions of the entire test.
A system that works perfectly across 500 feet of open ground tells us something.
A system that continues working after we put a stand of trees between the camera and the hub tells us something considerably more useful about how we might actually deploy it.
Solar Charging and Battery Performance
One of the reasons we were particularly interested in this system was the possibility of using solar charging rather than regularly visiting the camera to replace or recharge batteries.
That's especially important when a camera is installed somewhere remote.
If the system requires frequent maintenance, some of the convenience disappears.

Image and Video Quality
Range and connectivity are only part of the equation.
Ultimately, the camera has one job:
Show us what's happening.
So we also evaluated the quality of the images and video being produced under actual outdoor conditions.

What Happens When Things Don't Go Perfectly?
This is probably one of the most important sections of any real-world equipment test we do.
Almost anything can look good when everything is working exactly as intended.
The more useful question is:
What happens when something doesn't?

And it's often the information we most want to know before spending our money.
Living With It
After the initial testing, we wanted to move beyond individual tests and simply live with the system for a while.
That's an important distinction.
A device can perform perfectly during a carefully planned test and still become annoying when you actually use it every day.
